Math

Number Sense and Numeration

Students will represent the multiplication and division of fractions, using a variety of tools and strategies (e.g., use an area model to – solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with simple fractions. Students will describe real-life situations involving two quantities that are directly proportional. – solve problems involving percents expressed to one decimal place (e.g., 12.5%) and whole-number percents greater than 100 (e.g., 115%) (Sample problem:The total cost of an item with tax included [115%] is $23.00. Use base ten materials to determine the price before tax.);. Students will use estimation when solving problems involving operations with whole numbers, decimals, percents, and fractions, to help judge the reasonableness of a solution.

Each student's assessment will be based on his/her success with the "assessment focus" questions found in each lesson, as well as his/her daily participation in various math activities. These units also include quizzes and a summative assessment test.

It is important that assignments are done on a daily basis as math builds from one lesson to the next.

Religion & Family Life

CELEBRATING: Students will connect the actions of the Holy Spirit revealed at Pentecost in the early Church with the effects of the sacrament of Confirmation (the perfection of baptismal grace, the help of the Holy Spirit’s gifts and fruits, indelible mark, call to spread and defend the faith, stewardship) They will  identify in the Rite of Confirmation – requirements for the reception, the minister, the signs and rituals (laying on of hands, anointing with chrism) and what they symbolize and impart on the receiver, and explain how this sacrament reveals the Holy Spirit as one who gathers and forms the Church for service in the world. Students created a reflection paper on someone whom they thought lived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Students will be writing a final assessment test of all the concepts covered in this unit.

Literacy

We will be covering the skills relating to the basketball unit.

Students will determine the mass-to-volume ratio of different amounts of the same substance (e.g., water, corn syrup) They will  investigate and compare the density of a variety of liquids (e.g., water, corn syrup, liquid soap). They will use technological problem-solving skills to design, build, and test devices that use pneumatic or hydraulic systems. They will demonstrate an understanding of viscosity and compare the viscosity of various liquids (e.g., water, syrup, oil, ketchup) They will describe the relationship between mass, volume, and density as a property of matter. They will explain the difference between solids, liquids, and gases in terms of density, using the particle theory of matter (e.g., in general, solids are more dense than liquids, which are more dense than gases).

Assessment will be based on assignments assigned throughout the unit.  They will complete three quizzes and an end of the unit design challenge.

The first half of the literacy block will be spent reading selection from the Nelson program entitled "Secrets "

Students will adapt process, strategies and writing practices to suit own needs. They will reflect on own their development as a writer over time. They will develop voice as a writer by assuming various roles in writing for personal and social purpose. They will strive to become a writer that is more informed and able to create authentic writing pieces. They will be able to identify and deconstruct codes and conventions of media texts. They will apply knowledge of language and familiar text grammar(s) to own writing.  Improving word choices in writing, improving understanding when listening and analyzing view points in various texts will be our main focus. We will be examining nonfiction recount as our text pattern this month.  Students will create a narrative piece of creative writing in this unit. Students will also complete an end of the unit assessment piece.

Students will continue to work in their Literacy Circles as they complete the magazines assigned to this unit.

It is important that you child has reading material in the classroom at all times as I am provided them approximately 20 minutes a day of silent reading.
